The Bornwaterschool is a small public school located in a green environment between the city and the beach. We are located in Bloemendaal and are one of the thirty schools under the administration of WijWijzer. At our small public school, students are seen, known, and given the personal attention they need. They feel at home here—young and older children play and learn together. We provide a warm, safe, and stimulating environment where learning is both enjoyable and challenging. Every student naturally develops through play into the best version of themselves. Students are guided with enthusiasm, expertise, and loving encouragement by our teaching team, who bring not only educational experience but also insights from other professions. At Bornwaterschool, we do everything we can to ensure our students have an unforgettable, inspiring, and carefree school experience. How do we achieve this? Bornwaterschool has traditionally been the public school of Bloemendaal, and we take pride in that. Everyone has always been welcome here, regardless of religion, background, or beliefs. Diversity is an important theme in citizenship education and is an integral part of our identity.

As a school, we offer a broad range of educational activities, focusing not only on cognitive development but also on social-emotional, physical, and creative growth. Our goal is to nurture all talents that children possess and help them develop their potential. This way, we motivate students to learn and discover their own strengths. A strong support system enhances this process. For years, our school has achieved high scores on the final test in Group 8.
🏫 Small-Scale Education
With 170-180 students, Bornwaterschool is a small school. The great advantage of this is that we personally know every student, creating a sense of security and fostering a safe learning environment. We are attentive to the individual needs of each student. Additionally, our small-scale approach allows for cross-grade learning—students in lower grades have buddies in Groups 7 and 8 who assist them with reading or help in the school garden.
🌱 Sustainability
A few years ago, our school began focusing more on sustainability awareness. Under the motto "Born for the Future," we established a vegetable garden, introduced Warm Sweater Day to conserve energy, started recycling plastic, planted trees in the school garden, and provided every student with a Dopper water bottle. Currently, we are working on further greening the schoolyard and creating an outdoor classroom. By integrating the green garden and large playground into our curriculum, we ensure that nature becomes an active part of education.
🤝 Connection By collaborating with cultural and social institutions in Bloemendaal and Haarlem and by leveraging the expertise and support of parents, we strengthen the school community. Together with the childcare organization OpStoom, we are working towards forming an Integrated Child Center (IKC). We offer preschool care, speech therapy, physiotherapy, remedial teaching, midday and after-school care, and extracurricular activities that align with the curriculum and children's interests.
Mission
The Bornwaterschool has been providing public education to children from Bloemendaal and the surrounding area for nearly 90 years. The core values of freedom of thought, equality, and connection with oneself and the world are central to this. The Bornwaterschool is a public school, which means every student and every teacher is welcome, regardless of religion or belief. In this way, children learn from a young age that in the Netherlands we live together with a diversity of people. Although people may differ, it is important for children to realize that we can live together in respect and harmony, and that in our diversity, we collectively form the adults of the future. We see primary school not only as a place where knowledge is transferred but also as a meeting place where talents are developed, and where learning together and from each other is emphasized. The main focus is on the learning process and the joy of learning. Merely achieving cognitive outcomes cannot guarantee success in an unknown future. We believe that self-confidence and the ability to collaborate are values that prepare children for the world of tomorrow. In addition to thematic learning, our education is characterized by much attention to sports, culture, nature, and social awareness (citizenship). In
the coming years, the school will continue to develop in the areas of active learning and outdoor education. We believe that by creating a more dynamic school day, children will develop better and more broadly, have greater motivation to learn, and above all, enjoy gaining knowledge and skills.
